I'm currently back home in South Africa with family and enjoying the joy of social time over a glorious home cooked meals and interesting wines.  With my family scattered in different parts of the world it's sometimes difficult to remember that the dinner table is where we connect and share the day's challenges, triumphs and frustrations.  It's blistering hot here and meals are typically served outdoors from large bowls and platters which gives everyone a chance to interact by passing food around, dishing up for each other, sharing opinions on the meal - and there are normally many!  Its part of the conviviality of the table  - and that conviviality lasts long after the meal is done.  My favourite lunches in South Africa are those that last into dinner time. 


This holiday season, take time to slow down your pace of life and enjoy connecting at your table. May your gatherings be filled with conviviality, love, and the joy of being with loved ones.

MFK FIsher, a seminal American food writer, said this in her book Serve It Forth (1937) and it perfectly sums up food around the table  and all that it symbolizes : 


"And above all, friends should possess the rare gift of sitting. They should be able, no, eager to sit for hours - three, four, six - over a meal of soup and wine and cheese, as well as one of twenty fabulous courses. Then with good friends of such attributes, and good food on the table, and good wine in the pitcher, we may well ask, When shall we live if not now?"
